Redcliffe sits on a peninsula in Moreton Bay, and living that close to salt air has a predictable effect on cars. Rust. It develops faster near the coast, and a car that has spent years there often looks worse than it is mechanically. If yours has started to bubble or flake, the useful question is how much that actually changes what it's worth.
Surface rust versus structural rust
Not all rust is equal, and the difference matters to the offer.
Surface rust is cosmetic. It shows on panels, door bottoms and wheel arches, and it looks bad, but it doesn't stop the car from being sold or reduce the value of what's underneath.
Structural rust is more serious. When it reaches the chassis rails, sills or suspension mounts, it affects safety and what can be recovered. A car like that is often better sold for parts and metal than put back on the road.
Either way, a rusty car is still worth asking about. The engine, gearbox, interior, glass and driveline are often unaffected.
If the car has been near salt water
Salt water is considerably harder on a vehicle than rain. If the car has been flooded or driven through tidal water, the damage reaches the electrics and underbody quickly. Our guide to flood-damaged cars and what they're worth explains how that changes the figure, and what not to do before getting a quote.
What to tell us
- Where the rust is, and how far it has spread
- Whether it has reached the chassis or underbody
- Whether the car runs and drives
- Anything that still works well, such as the engine or gearbox
Photographs of the underbody and wheel arches help more than a description.
Collection from the peninsula
We collect from where the car sits, running or not, and removal is free. You don't need to drive a rusty car anywhere or pay for a tow.
Registration
If registration is current, returning the plates may entitle you to a refund of the unused portion. Our guide to returning plates and claiming a rego refund explains how.
